ABSTRACT :
One of the leading historians of global history Sebastian Conrad has proposed an integration approach in his 2016 seminal book on the field. His approach of global integration has been used then to explore global history of how objects and ideas from the West were diffused to and received in non-European societies. His examples include European clocks, Enlightenment spirit, Marxist ideas, human rights, international law, and nationalisms. However, these examples seem to convey global processes of integrating non-European societies only to the West, bearing an imbalanced view of global integration. This essay argues that using comparative and connective analysis to look at early-modern global history of the elephant seen through Dutch sources can shed light on an entangled history of Europe and Asia and give a more balanced view of global integration without one being so dominant.
